HALLOWEEN AND DIA DE LOS MUERTOS

TUE., OCT. 31 - MON., NOV. 20  |
'NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD' WITH LIVE MUSIC   If it wasn't enough that Tim League and co. had managed to track down a print of George Romero's 1968 flesh-eating classic (accept no remakes), Pulitzer-nominated composer P. Kellach Waddle and his PKWProductions ensemble set the mood with a selection of eerie instrumentals. Sample something from the special, one-night-only menu while Waddle debuts three new horror-inspired pieces. Wait, is that really red wine in your glass? Or something ... meatier. 476-1320. http://www.drafthouse.com/

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS EXHIBITION   While Mexic-Arte has sponsored a Day of the Dead celebration for more than two decades, this is the first year it has opened the gallery up to the spirits. Calaveras, or papier-mâché skeletons, adorn the walls and mimic the living, marking the path through the altars to those who have passed, to reach a specially commissioned sand painting by Santa Barrazza at the gallery's still-beating heart. Through Nov. 5. Mon.-Thu., 10am-6pm; Fri.-Sat., 10am-5pm; Sun., noon-5pm. Mexic-Arte Museum, 419 Congress, 480-9373. $5 ($1, kids under 12). http://www.mexic-artemuseum.org/

FLIMFLAMFOLLIES   Mix a hillbilly Halloween with ragtime raunch and flapper flair, courtesy of the inimitably louche White Ghost Shivers. With pedal steel songs of drifters and deadbeats, courtesy of Dallasites the Theater Fire; salacious seduction from the strings of San Francisco’s the Peculiar Pretzelmen; and the Chekovian vaudeville of the St. Idiot Collective. Mon., Oct. 30, 7pm-2am. The Oaks, 10206 FM 973 N. Manor, 512/278-8788. $20 (advance tickets available at www.unlockaustin.com & Cheapo Discs). http://www.whiteghostshivers.com/

HAUNTED AQUIFER CAVE   Take a trip into the world beneath your feet and meet Austin’s own endangered Barton Springs Salamander, who makes the eerie limestone caves its home. Through Oct. 28 & 30-31, 10am-5pm; Oct. 29, noon-5pm. Sheffield Education Center, 2201 Barton Springs Dr., 478-3170 (327-8181 for group visits). Free. http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/splash

HAUNTED FOREST   Outdoor art commune Enchanted Forest has turned 3 acres of woodland into a genre-busting haunted trail. Bloodcurdling and wondrous, the Haunted Forest is part screamathon, part art exhibition. No high tech animatronics here, just ingenuity, passion, and ordinary objects recycled into acts of beauty and moments of chaos. Take the labyrinth: just some old canvas, winding through saplings. Get five yards into its twists and turns, with voices whispering and claws scratching on the sheets, and try not breaking into a sprint. The terror evaporates when, suddenly, the path opens up into a leafy glade of projected art images. Perfect for those that like their Halloween a little weird. Oct. 26-28, 31, Nov. 2, 6:30-11pm. 1412 W. Oltorf. $10 ($5, kids under 12). http://www.austinhauntedforest.com/

HAUNTED HABANA HALLOWEEN PARTY   Screams, Cuban-style, with a special freaky menu of hairball salad and roasted hearts, and a prize for best costume. Tue., Oct. 31, until 10pm. Habana SoCo, 2728 S. Congress, 443-4253. $5 (free, kids). http://www.habana.com/

HOUSE OF TORMENT   What makes the House of Torment so blood-curdlingly appealing? Is it screamtreprenuer Dan McCullough’s innovative two-story design? Is it the cast of world-class scarers that loom, slither, and pounce out of nowhere? While they’re all present in gruesome abundance, it’s Austin’s own bone daddy, the magnificent Mr. Creep, who makes this unmissable. Seven feet (in his velvet top hat) of gentleman ghoul, Creep terrifies the grownups and provides candy to the tinies. Remember, if you’re too scared to make it all the way through the house, you better be brave enough to have your photo taken for the Wall of Shame. Ask nicely, and Creeps may hold your hand for the camera. Oct. 26-31, Nov. 3-4, 7pm-12mid. 523 Highland Mall Blvd, 569-7425. $13 (kids under 12 require adult accompaniment). http://www.houseoftorment.com/

MANSION OF TERROR   Horror maestro Norm Glenn’s Mansion was voted best haunted house by Lions Gate Films last year. But rather than resting on his rotting laurels, he’s birthed conjoined twins of terror – not one but two attractions. For long-lived Halloweeners, The Asylum raises memories of Richard Garriott’s legendary Britannia Manor. While Garriott’s sadly defunct haunt had a role-playing element, Glenn’s simpler tribute has a puzzle built into the walls. With Pitch Dark, Texas’ only unlit Halloween haunt, he’s hit bloody paydirt. Hold on to that flashlight the undead prospector hands you, since it’s the only illumination in these catacombs. Oh, did the gruesome greeter not tell you – sometimes, that flashlight may just stop working, just when you might need it the most. Oct. 26-31, 7pm-12mid. 2000 S. I-35. $12-16. http://www.mansionofterror.com/

NIGHTMARE FACTORY   Sometimes experience counts for a lot. The Nightmare Factory may only have been at its current site for three years, but Stephen Laurent brings 19 seasons of scaring skill to his screamatorium. If anyone fears that means he’s run out of ideas, they’re terribly wrong. This year, visitors can pick their own route through two almost totally different horror trails. But it’s not just one neat trick. The scenes at the Factory are some of the most elaborate around, and also some of the most innovative (two words: Clown Room). For diehard goreheads, bargain wristbands buy multiple entrances to try all the options. Through Oct. 31. Fri.-Sat., 7:30pm-12mid; Sun.-Thu., 7:30-10:30pm (7:30-12mid, Oct. 31). 17050 S. I-35, 445-3327. $10-25. http://www.nightmarefactory.com/

OWEN EGERTON’S ANNUAL HALLOWEEN PARTY   Double-feature madness with the Sinus Show’s master of mayhem. Director Scott Glosserman gives a special sneak screening of his twisted new slasher shocker, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, before everyone shrieks to Halloween IV: The Return of Michael Myers. All together now, “I'm telling you Michael Myers is here, in this town! He's here to kill that little girl and anybody who gets in his way!” Alamo Drafthouse Downtown, 409 Colorado, 476-1320. $15. http://www.originalalamo.com/

SPIRIT THEATRE   All Hallow’s Eve is the night when the barrier between the living and spirit world is weakest. Spiritualism expert Chris Walden takes you on a high tech, interactive exploration of the history of trying to touch the other side. Oct. 28-Nov. 2, 7:30, 10pm. Wild Basin Wilderness, 805 Capital of TX Hwy. N., 327-7622. $25-36 (ages 13-16 require adult accompaniment). http://www.wildbasin.org/

Stassney, 326-4466; Tue., Oct. 31, Jovita's, 1619 S. First, 447-7825. http://www.a-1parts.com/savs/halloween06.htm
